I just had this very same error occur on my MacBook Pro Core Duo a few minutes ago - I pulled out the Ethernet cable and it reset itself, and once I plugged the Ethernet back in, it was fine again. I have my suspicions that it may be related to Parallels and how it configures network connectivity behind the scenes even when it's not running. Do you have Parallels installed on your machine?
